TLUC is the lead consultant for the City of
South Gate's first General Plan Update in over
20 years. Since the summer of 2006, South
Gate community members have been engaged
in an innovative and inclusive participatory
planning process, focused on developing a
smart growth vision for the future of the city.
TLUC, along with Raimi and Associates,
developed an outreach and engagement program that has resulted in the
participation of hundreds of local residents.
Over the course of seven months residents and
other stakeholders have participated in four
Community Congress meetings and a week-long
Community Charrette. These events, conducted
in both and English and Spanish, focused on
educating and involving citizens on issues of
land use, transportation, economic development
and smart growth.
The widely attended workshops have provided an opportunity for residents
to express their vision and input for the future of South Gate. Based on
extensive public input the city staff and the consultants have finalized existing
conditions reports, developed a Vision Statement and Guiding Principles,
and are currently working on the first draft of the General Plan. In
the Spring of 2007, South Gate residents will
have a chance to comment on the draft General
Plan and celebrate their role in guiding
the future growth of their city.
