New Partners for Smart Growth Conference a Success

On February 8-10, over 1,500 participants attended the New Partners for Smart Growth Conference held in downtown Los Angeles. Planners, elected officials, developers and community organizations from across the country gathered for a three-day conference to discuss how Smart Growth is taking shape in their cities and towns.

As part of the conference, TLUC moderated a panel titled "Smart Growth and Social Equity: Lessons in Civic Engagement." There was overwhelming interest from conference participants on how to effectively engage community members from diverse backgrounds in local planning initiatives. TLUC presented our work on the City of South Gate General Plan, and Ramon Trias and Elise Rollins discussed their work in Fort Pierce, Florida.

South Gate Residents Participate in First Ever Community Charrette

South Gate Residents Participate in First Ever Community CharretteIn late January, South Gate residents participated in a series of four community meetings to address their vision for the future of the city. Through an extensive public engagement process, residents discussed their preferences and concerns for growth and shared their vision for a safe, prosperous and green city.

As part of the General Plan Update process TLUC, along with Matt Raimi and Associates, has led the City and community members in an extensive visioning process that has captured the attention and participation of hundreds of local residents and stakeholders.

During the week long Community Charrette, the team met with city staff and community members to discuss various growth scenarios and develop land use designations for the General Plan. Over the course of the week community members participated in a series of discussions on land use, transportation, economic development and smart growth.

After seven months of ongoing community engagement and input, the team is preparing the draft General Plan, which will be released in the Spring of 2007. Over the next few months, the community will have a chance to review the draft General Plan and discuss how citizens can remain involved in the planning process.
